Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke has firmly dismissed speculation about a possible defection to the All Progressives Congress (APC), reaffirming his loyalty to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as the party prepares for its national convention.

Speaking in Abuja after chairing the inaugural meeting of the PDP’s National Convention Accommodation Sub-Committee, Adeleke emphasized that attending social events hosted by APC members does not signal political realignment. “I’m a very civilised person. If I have friends in the APC and they invite me to a wedding or social function, I will attend. That doesn’t mean I’m joining them,” he said.

Adeleke currently serves as deputy chairman of the convention and leads the accommodation committee, roles he says reflect his deep involvement in PDP affairs. His remarks come amid a wave of defections from the party, including governors from Bayelsa and Enugu, leaving the PDP with just eight governors nationwide.

Despite the turbulence, Adeleke portrayed the upcoming October 15–16 convention as a rallying point for unity and renewal. “The PDP does not believe in propaganda or endless talk. Our focus is on unity, organisation and success. By God’s grace, our convention will be a great success, and the PDP will continue to grow from strength to strength,” he said.

While Adeleke’s public commitment has bolstered PDP morale, APC officials in Osun have welcomed the speculation. State chairman Tajudeen Adegoke suggested “the tide is turning” toward the ruling party. Analysts note that Adeleke’s presence at APC-linked events has fueled rumors, but the governor framed such appearances as gestures of personal civility rather than political ambition.

“Politics is dynamic. Nobody knows what will happen tomorrow, but everyone has the right to do as they wish,” Adeleke added, acknowledging the fluid nature of political affiliations.
